Lyla spends three days out of the week with my mom. My mom only speaks Japanese with Lyla in the hopes that Lyla will be bi-lingual. We often tell people that Lyla knows more Japanese words than she does English. Apparently, we were lying. Out of curiosity, we decided to compile a list of all the words Lyla knows with English on one side and Japanese on the other. The result was quite disappointing to my mom. She has vowed to work even harder to push the Japanese language on our 17 month old girl. Lyla knows and uses a total of about 86 words. Of these 86, only 26 are Japanese. Not too shabby considering every other person in her life only speaks English with her. Here is the Japanese side of the list (with translation):

That is more than what I know in Japanese and I am "only" 32.
